When is The Viking Festival ? October 14 th and 15th, 2006. Other races and practice sessions will occur starting in the Spring through Fall (May through October). See the Events Calendar, Church Boat Races, menu of this site. The season will culminate at the Viking Festival. Where will it be held? Church Boat RacesWho can Race? Racing is open to all men and women over the age of 16, at all levels of ability. Crews can be all men, all women or mixed. Mixed crews must have a minimum of 7 women in the boat.
When do we race? The race schedule will be available soon on the Events Calendar, Viking Boat Races, on this site.
Where do we race? The Festival and Races will be on beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene at the City Park , West of the Boardwalk Pier.
Where do we put boats in? Boats can be put in the water East of the Resort from the City Parking lot boat ramp.
Where do we practice? Practices will be held at the Post Falls Rowing Club and CDA Rowing Club.
How long is the racing distance? Each race on the schedule is a different distance. Church Boat Racers will train through the spring and summer and build up to the marathon in the fall. The first races in the spring are the 500 meter sprints. There will then be 5km and 10km which are preliminary races. The Viking Festival race is a 42km marathon. The day before the Viking Festival marathon there will be 500 meter time trial sprint races.
Are there prizes or awards or trophies? Medals, trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. As well, there are a host of wonderful fundraising prizes.
How much is the entry fee? Race entry Fees are $6 per team member/race. The Boat and equipment rental costs are separate from race fees. See “Starting or Joining a Team”.
How can I register? You can register by clicking "Registration" on the menu for this site.
Is there a registration deadline? Yes, registration is final 24 hours before race day.
Can a team display a team or our company banner? Yes, Teams will be permitted to display a commercial banner. You also may fly the banner or team pennant on the boat when racing. Do I need to be an experienced "rower" to participate? No, all you need is the desire to have fun. This is a new sport to the area so most of the participants have never picked up an oar. Each new team will start training with an experienced coach. Click “Start a Team” then proceed to ”Team Training Packages”
Do we need our own boat? No. Boats are available for practices from April to October. They are also available for the Church boat races. In addition, Valhalla Racing Boats manufactures boats for sale or lease.
How many people do I need for my team? A full Church Boat team consists of 15 people: 14 rowers, one (1) coxie team may also consider having up to (two) 2 alternates. If a team is short on practice day or at a race you may pick up (two) 2 non-team rowers, (ringers) as substitutes for unexpected previously paid drop outs.
What about paddles and lifejackets? Basic paddles and lifejackets are provided during your practices and at the events. However, you or your team can purchase your own set of oars and lifejackets from Viking Boat Adventures, www.vikingboatadventures.com. We encourage you to do so.
How do we book a practice session? Your team captain can book your team's training sessions by calling our Coordinator to schedule boat time.
How long is each practice session? Each practice session is one (1) hour.
What time do I need to arrive for my practice session? You should arrive at least 15 minutes before your team's practice time.
Where are practice sessions held? All practice sessions take place CDA Rowing Club dock or Post Falls Rowing Club dock. Please see map.
Do we need our own coach? No, a qualified coach is provided by the Viking Boat Adventures. Each coach has a rowing background and knowledge of training a Church team.
Will food be available on-site? Food and refreshments will be available on site at Post Falls Rowing Club Dock for purchase at the Mallards Restaurant.
What if the weather is poor? The races and practice sessions take place rain or shine. The weather is always wonderful in Coeur d'Alene , even if it rains.
What should I wear and bring? Prepare to wear layers of clothing that do not restrict your movement. Keep in mind you will warm up quickly after the practice begins. Wear comfortable clothing that does not hold or absorb moisture and has a tighter fit rather than loose or baggy. Bring warm hat and gloves. A thermal layer such as Polypropelene is a good idea. Shorts or similar tights are best for your lower body, t-shirts, shorts, a nylon wind breaker (top and bottoms) are examples of suitable clothing. Some people prefer to sit on a pad or towel while they are practicing. If it rains, you may need a towel otherwise you will need sunscreen. You will get wet, a change of clothes and shoes would be a good addition to your handbag. Be sure not to wear your brand new running shoes, water sandals or aqua socks make the best footwear.
How can I be a “Ringer”? Ringers are required to have attended at least enough practices to be certified competent prior to the race. Any certified rower may row as a “Ringer” on any team that wishes to pick them up on race day as long as the team consists of no more than two “Ringers”. If you wish to be a “Ringer” please submit your name to our Events Coordinator. We will then contact you if we hear of teams with open seats. You may contact as many teams as you wish to let them know you are available. How do I rent a boat and what does it cost? The cost for Boat rental or team programs may vary depending on where you rent a boat or if you get on a team that owns a boat. Boat rentals may available from Sponsors and advertisers on this site. Some sponsors may also have boats or may be sponsoring a team and need to fill a spot, so ask about joining their team.

How do I buy a boat and what are the costs? For complete rowing freedom it is great to own your own boat. Look at “Boat Rentals” on the menu then “Purchase Boat” menu from the Viking Boat Adventures Site www.vikingboatadventures.com.
Boating Safety
What safety precautions are in place? The Marine division of the Sheriffs Department will be on duty at all race activities. During races and the Viking Festival, there will be a safety boat on the water. Return to FAQ Index
Pledging for Races
Who does the Viking Boat Races benefit? All proceeds from the Viking Boat Races go to support the Coeur d'Alene Rowing Club and the Post Falls Rowing Club. Pledges may go to other North Idaho youth programs and charities.
Do I have to raise money? No, Pledging is optional but each participant is encouraged find pledges.
What do I get in return for finding pledges? For raising the minimum amount of $50 you will receive an official souvenir Races T-shirt. You will also be eligible for other prizes from sponsors.
Can I pledge myself? Yes, participants can make their own donations.
When and where do I hand in my collected pledges? You may hand in your pledge cards to the Events Coordinator anytime prior to the Races or on the Racing day. Final pledge card deadline is Saturday after the Races. However, your pledges must be handed in 24 hours prior to the day of the event in order for you to be eligible for prizes.
Where can I get a pledge card? Your team captain will receive pledge cards upon your team's registration. Please contact your Team Captain for your pledge card.
